Medicare and Medicaid
Medicare is a basic health insurance program in the United States for people over 65 and people with disabilities. The program has four parts:
- Hospital insurance (Part A) helps pay for inpatient hospital care or stay in a skilled nursing facility, and some home health care.
- Medical insurance (Part B) helps pay for doctors’ services, outpatient hospital services and other medical services not covered by hospital insurance
- Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C): includes organizations providing health services and allows people with Medicare Parts A and B to choose to receive all health care through one of these organizations
- Coverage Medicare prescription drug (Part D) helps pay for medications doctors prescribed as part of treatment

It is common that many people think that Medicaid and Medicare are the same, but they are two different programs. Medicaid is a program administered statewide that provides hospital and medical coverage to people with limited income and few resources. Each state has its own rules about what is covered on Medicaid and who are entitled to receive this benefit. For more information about Medicaid, contact your local medical assistance agency or social services in your state.
